Abstract
The thesis is about small district heating based on biomass which is neutral concerning the amount of the emission of carbon dioxide. The focus is on projects in the field of small capacity because they represent a very efficient way of heating. Furthermore, the installation of small district heating in Upper Austria is compared with the situation in the French region Rhône-Alpes. Both regions are similar concerning their density of population, their economic power as well as the forest stand.
First, the thesis deals with the general aspects of biomass such as definitions and standards. Appliances of biomass utilisation are shown as well as the situation of biomass utilisation in Austria and in the European Union. The second part of the thesis is about small district heating whereas the field of the so called micro systems is treated separately. Following this, information about the French region of Rhône-Alpes concerning economical and cultural aspects is given. In chapter four the results of a survey regarding motivation, satisfaction and problems in both regions are presented and compared in order to give an outlook about the further spreading of small district heating.
