    Abstract

The present work investigates the environmental and economical impact of cycling for the development of sustainable control concepts for urban traffic. The current state and evolution of urban traffic in Austria's cities is assessed in the theoretical part of this thesis, where a special focus is put on the aspect of cycling. Different models for choice of transportation are critically compared, where models which focus on cycling as an alternative are especially emphasized. Aspects which can positively impact a choice for using the bicycle as a preferred means of transportation are analyezed, addressing methods of environmental marketing, sinus milieu based target-group segmentation as well as possible pull- and push measures. The empirical part puts the described theory into context with the findings from interviews with municipal subject matter experts from six state capitals. This allows to elucidate the general requirements for urban cycling and retrospectives on realized projects as well as the identification of areas where further action is needed.
