Abstract
The FMEA is a preventive tool of quality-planning. Its use promises reduction of costs on the quantitative and rise of enterprise-internal utility on the qualitative side by listing possible mistakes, valued by entrance probability, meaning and discovery probability, followed by appropriate measures. In the automotive-supplier-industry, its use is demanded by the customers and for certain certifications it is a key condition. In Upper- Austria, the largest part of the automotive-suppliers are united in the Automobil-Cluster OÖ. Whether and to what extent the utilities promised by the FMEA actually can be obtained, if an increase of the competitiveness is possible, which problems appear in use and whether Upper Austria as industrial location can be secured by using the FMEA, was determined by means of an inquiry under the automotive-suppliers. The analysis showed that the largest problems appear with the acceptance of the FMEA and the results determined. Competitive advantages are less a reason for using the FMEA than specifications that come from outside. Especially in the reduction of mistakes and its subsequent costs, the enterprises succeeded. A possible increase of the competitiveness by the use of the FMEA could not be verified.
