Abstract
Despite the fact that Austria has already committed to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2016, neither suitable indicators have been defined nor included in systematic data collection to make the implementation in the education sector, related to SDG 4.7, measurable. The authors describe international and national approaches to arrive at meaningful indicators and elaborate suggestions on how to obtain appropriate data in the Austrian context. Finally, they point out the necessity to develop process indicators in addition to output/outcome indicators, as these are a necessary prerequisite to make the quality and the level of competence in relation to education for sustainable development in Austria visible.
