Abstract

The deinstitutionalisation of long stay patients is one of the main goals in modern psychiatry. In the restructering of the care for the people suffering from chronic psychiatric deseases coutries go different ways. But all these efforts have to answer the question, how to find different possibilities and facilities to care for the long stay patients outside of hospitals. We are convinced with many other, that people suffering on severe mental problems have the ability and the potency to live outside of the institutions. The most difficult task is to find out the abilities and necessities of these people and to make them responsible and self-confident and to enable them to decide about the way they want to live. In Upper Austria we started a special programm "Lebensformen" to transfer more than 400 long stay patients into living facilities outdside in the community.
