Abstract
The compounds KAuS and KAuSe were obtained by the reaction of potassium chalcogenide, gold and the corresponding chalcogen at 750?C. They form transparent needle-shaped crystals. The two compounds are isostructural and crystallize with an orthorhombic unit cell, space group Cmcm, Z=4 with the lattice constants KAuS: a=6.304(3)Ä, b=7.850(4)Ä, c=6.520(3)Ä; KAuSe: a=6.494(2)Ä, b=8.107(3)Ä, c=6.672(1)Ä. Their crystal structures were determined from four-circle diffractometer data and refined to conventional R-values of 0.045 (KAuS) and 0.030 (KAuSe) respectively. They are characterized by infinite zig-zag chains of gold and chalcogen atoms. The gold atoms show a linear coordination the bond angles at the chalcogen atoms are close to 90?. The potassium atoms are coordinated by five chalcogen neighbours in a nearly square pyramidal configuration. This new structure type can be traced back to a c.c.p. arrangement of chalcogen atoms, in which the potassium atoms occupy the octahedral interstices whereas the gold atoms center every second of the tetrahedral edges parallel to (100). The structural relationships with KCuS are discussed.
