Abstract

The paper deals with the Functional Decomposition Method, which generalises the well known concept of Functional Analysis in the conceptual design phase for a technical system. It emphasises three guidelines. Concentrate on functions and not on technical solutions as far as possible, set up various Functional Solution Concepts, and find simple mathematical models for a certain Functional Solution Concept, which supports the comparative evaluation in the light of the Funcional Requirements. For computer support of the conceptual work, the Functional Decomposition Method efficiently can be represented in a data base system.
