    Abstract

In the year 2000 the European Union has established the framework of community action in the field of water policy because of the fact that Water is not a commercial product like any other but, rather, a heritage which must be protected, defended and treated as such. The main objective is that Member States shall achieve a good ecological status for surface and ground water at the latest 15 years after the date of entry into force of the Directive. To reach this aim it is essential to perform several tasks on the due date. Especially operators of water power plants are affected by the Directive. Very important in this regard are the Heavily Modified Waterbodies which are bodies of surface water that - as a result of physical alterations by human activity - are substantially changed in character. To acquire the economical consequences from the Water Framework Directive on power generation in Austria there are some calculations for three water power plants in the diploma thesis which are based on the Qmin-rate of the particular power plant.
