Abstract
This paper deals with a digital approach for cooling in metal production, in particular for continuous casting secondary cooling. Conventional proportional control of cooling water flow rates to adjust the cooling rate is replaced by pulse width modulated cooling.
This cooling principle is realized by a closely integrated nozzle - switching valve unit with a pneumatic piloting. The development of this system is based on extensive
simulation of processes as well as of components. Experiments with prototypal realization proved the expectations that this concept provides an excellent control of cooling intensity in spatial and in time dimension.
