Abstract

Computer support of conceptual design means on the one hand guiding the design team through the design process to assure some systematic approach, and on the other hand the representation of this work and its results on the computer. This documentation of the design should also represent a teaching medium for new engineers, and, furthermore, it should be a huge knowledge base for all designers, looking for any kind of information about a specific project, part, module or plant. Therefore, different kinds of representing the design are necessary, ranging from common drawing data in a CAD system and complex simulation models in some computer simulation environment to simple files for representing knowledge data.
