The author brings into relief major state initiatives conducted in formerly socialist Bulgaria, with a focus on the 1970s and 1980s. International events such as the "Banner of Peace" Children's Assembly are discussed in the context of the so called "cultural nationalism" led by culture minister Ludmila Zhivkova. Such projects are closely evaluated with regard to their educational and political value today.
