Abstract
This diploma thesis describes the properties of biodegradable plastics and discusses their ecological advantages as well as their risks. Taking into account certain limitations, plastics made of renewable resources can, in contrast to conventional plastics, lead to an ecological amelioration. The theoretical description of the four ecological competitive strategies is followed by an explanation of the associated ecologically oriented promotion policies. The environment-friendly plastics can be introduced onto the market with the help of defensive or offensive competitive strategies. After an observation of the market situation in Austria and France, the developed theory concerning ecological competitive strategies will be applied to biodegradable plastics and different possibilities of the associated promotion policies will be elaborated. As a result, defensive competitive strategies only have limited use. This dossier sets a high value on examples of ecological competitive strategies that have already been put into practice.
