Abstract
The modern information technology enables global network structures and thus increasingly influences global business relations. Due to its strong roots in all areas of life, IT is perceived as both the cause of environmental impacts, as well as an opportunity to reduce energy and resource consumption in their own ("Green in IT "), as well as in other sectors (" Green by IT "). The aim of this master thesis is therefore to examine the status quo of environmental orientation in the IT service sector. While doing this, the main focus lies on the perception of the term "Green IT". As a part of an actual situation analysis, the environmental impacts of the industry as well as the existing environmental policies and certificates for the IT sector will be presented. Then Green IT measures and trends in different areas of work and life are examined.
The evaluation of the perception and practical implementation of the concept in IT service companies occurs on the basis of an analysis of current international studies on the topic "Green IT", as well as a case study analysis of two Austrian IT companies. The key findings of the study analysis are among others the lack of a holistic approach in the implementation and the focus on increasing energy efficiency.
