Description
The aim of the first field-research-phase (participatory action research)was to investigate the socio-economic framework of the region and to collect data in order to specify the most pressing problem of the Rwizi people. A questioning of the people showed clearly that the shortage of fire-wood is the most pressing problem. In the second phase a concrete plan to solve this problem was worked out focussing mainly on the ecological durability of the development. The implementation of an energy-efficient and cost-saving alternative method for cooking with a clay stove will help to improve the life-conditions especially of the Rwizi women who are responsible for the energy supply of the families. Austria is internationally acclaimed for its high standards in oven-building and a transfer of Austrian technology and advice from Austrian experts could greatly contribute to the development. As a "back-up" a reafforestation-program is planned. From the ecological point of view it is better, however, to plant indigenous trees that are more resistent to pests and draughts.
