Renewable Materials for Energy Harvesting and Energy Storage

Project: Funded researchFFG - Austrian Research Promotion Agency

Project Details

Description

The aim of Renew4EHS is to develop electronic systems from renewable materials that are simultaneously high-performing, environmentally friendly and energy autonomous. We will target technologies that integrate biodegradable and renewable substrate materials, such as bacterial nanocellulose and fungal mycelium skin, with conductive carbon-based inks. The holistic approach pioneers the use of these materials in the development of fully sustainable and biodegradable triboelectric and piezoelectric nanogenerators. These devices will harvest energy from renewable sources, alongside hybrid materials, to create innovative energy-harvesting solutions. Unlike when made from conventional materials, these nanogenerators will ensure a lower environmental impact while maintaining high performance. Transforming energy storage, we will develop sodium-ion capacitors from sustainable carbon electrodes and bacterial nanocellulose or fungal mycelium-based separators that offer higher energy densities, rapid charging, and long-term stability. The research goals of Renew4EHS are:
●Biodegradable substrates for renewable energy systems
●Conductive carbon-based inks for recyclable electronic components
●Energy-harvesting technologies from renewable and biodegradable materials
●Sodium-ion capacitors for efficient, renewable energy storage
●Fully integrated, self-powered, sustainable electronic systems
