Description

Industry 5.0 introduced strategic initiatives of digitization, flexibility, sustainability, and human-centric approach to advance the concepts of cyber-physical systems and smart factories. In comparison to traditional wired solutions and wireless solutions like WiFi, which remains competitive, 5G offers high-bandwidth, low-latency, and excellent coverage to support mobility enabling diverse industry application scenarios. The flexibility in network deployment for smart factories that comes with 5G and the support for industry 5.0 with the human-machine and multi-robot interactions makes this technology essential. Advancements in edge computing, artificial intelligence, and use of robotic platforms in production environments can provide further impetus to automate and digitize the manufacturing processes. Similarly, advanced 5G solutions, paired with technologies like smart cameras and situational awareness, can help address traffic congestion and safety issues specifically in tunnels where GNSS signals are unavailable. A safe tunnel environment can only be achieved through an optimized and balanced interaction of all aspects that influence safety, including infrastructure, equipment, user behavior, operational practices and emergency response procedures. While these initiatives are promising they pose considerable challenge for the communication system to provide the desired services. LUMEIK-5G addresses these challenges of high-speed and low-latency connectivity, localization, and situational awareness utilizing technologies of edge computing and AI to fulfil the promises of 5G enabling services for harsh environments. Moreover, designing scalable infrastructure to meet the growing demands and integrating diverse technologies facilitating multi-robot collaboration and safe navigation of vehicles will be investigated. The activities and developments carried out in LUMEIK-5G will be demonstrated as a laboratory proof-of-concept in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders and disseminated to a broader community for larger impacts.
