Green Plastic Recycling Factory for Food Contact Materials

Project: Funded researchFFG - Austrian Research Promotion Agency

Project Details

Description

The greenPLAST-food flagship project, entitled "Green Plastic Recycling Factory for Food Contact Materials", aims to revolutionize the recycling of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) plastic packaging waste (PPW) for use in food contact materials (FCM). This large-scale collaborative research project aims to develop innovative, energy efficient, and sustainable processes for PPW recycling, with a particular focus on achieving safe, high-quality polyolefin recyclates that meet the decontamination standards required for FCM. This will be achieved by combining AI-based sorting mechanisms, optimized recycling technologies, and advanced decontamination methods. Sustainability assessment alongside technical process development will ensure the development of a sustainable, scalable, and industrially viable solution for PPW recycling beyond existing solutions.
