Description
Considering that many children do not have access to the classic "text-illustration" relationship of children's books because of a sensory, intellectual, motor or cognitive impairment, that the supply of accessible books meeting their needs for access to books and reading is very limited, there is a shortage of books for children with disabilities.
Considering that the range of needs for personalisation of text and illustrations when it comes to children with disabilities is very wide, the digital book, unlike a commercialised paper edition, can offer a high potential for personalisation for a rich user experience.
Considering that a digital adaptation of an illustrated book can be cheaper to produce and distribute than a paper book, and in several languages, digital publishing technology would then allow more accessible books to be produced and distributed more widely.
In response to this, and in order to work towards a more inclusive society, the FLEX PICTURE EBOOK project aims to make children's books, which are widely used in class by teachers, accessible to different profiles of children with disabilities. The FLEX PICTURE EBOOK consortium brings together teachers and children's professionals, as well as accessibility and digital accessibility experts from Austria, France, Italy and Lithuania.
