Description

Background: Approximately 5-10% of newborns need respiratory support or resuscitation immediately after birth and effective ventilation plays a crucial role in this process. Various neonatal face masks are available e.g. anatomical, round or ergonomic face masks but there is still limited evidence regarding the efficacy of different mask designs. Hypothesis, Research Need: This thesis aims to investigate the effectiveness of different neonatal face mask designs by inner diameter, anatomical fit and efficacy using neonatal manikins. The top two models of this evaluation process will be compared in a real neonatal resuscitation setting. The aim of the study is to evaluate the most effective face mask for neonatal ventilation and resuscitation. Methodology: The thesis consists of three study phases: Phase 1: Comparison of the inner diameter and anatomical fit of 20 different neonatal face masks on a 3D surface model. Phase 2: Comparison of handling and efficacy of ventilation of four face masks on neonatal manikins by respiratory function monitoring conducted by midwifery students. Phase 3: Prospective randomized cross-over trial comparing the efficacy of the two best face masks during real neonatal resuscitation of newborns with a gestational age of  34+0 weeks by respiratory function monitoring. Analysis Tools: Data collected in each study phase will be analysed using descriptive and comparative statistics. Results will be presented and visualized in graphs and charts. Expected Outcomes: This study is expected to address the existing knowledge gap regarding the efficacy and handling of neonatal face mask designs in neonatal resuscitation.
