Changes in the Organization and Economy of Time Among City Migrants in Transitional Third World Societies

Historical, theoretical, and empirical data regarding changes in time and action rationality, especially in the context of migration into cities, are analyzed in this study and described on a cultural comparative level. Next to an historical section dealing with the transition from ?event time? in ethnic societies to the ?globalized? universal time, individual modernity and mobility are analyzed in the context of accelerated urbanization. All utilized data were generated in IEZ projects and focus primarily on the countries Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Papua New Guinea.
