Project Details

Description

In all continuous casting processes the cleanliness of steel is an important topic. Many strategies are employed to prevent non-metallic inclusions (NMI) from getting into the mould. Nonetheless a non-negligible amount of particles is getting embedded into the solidified shell, especially in the so-called inclusion-band which is formed in the bending area. The aim of this project is to get a better understanding of the formation process and its dependence on the flow inside the strand. With this knowledge, strategies will be formulated to modify (e.g. homogenize, relocate) the inclusion-band by employing electromagnetic fields. By imposing Lorentz-forces on certain areas in the flow, the deposition of NMIs shall be influenced. In contrast to other research projects (e.g.within the K1-MET competence center) where Ar-gas injections in the SEN and mould area with EMBR or M-EMS are investigated, this project will focus on the employment of magnetic fields in the bending zone and will deal with the behaviour of NMIs in MHD flows.
