Das FAW wurde als Forschungsinstitut der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz im Jahre 1990 von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roland R. Wagner initiiert.
Seit Februar 1992 befindet sich das FAW neben dem Standort 'Universität Linz' im Softwarepark Hagenberg im Mühlviertel (ca. 25 km nordöstlich von Linz).
Am FAW-Hagenberg ist der Großteil der ca. 30 Mitarbeiter tätig. Das FAW hat noch zwei weitere Niederlassungen in Wien (TU Wien) und Prag (TU Prag).
Ende 1997 erfolgte die Eingliederung des Forschungsinstituts im Rahmen des UOG'93 als eigenständiges Universitätsinstitut der Universität Linz:
Institut Für Anwendungsorientierte Wissenschaftsverarbeitung.
Seit seiner Gründung konnten bereits über 100 Projekte mit Wirtschafts- und Forschungspartnern erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden.
Die Kooperation mit Partnern aus Wirtschaft und Industrie sind drittmittelfinanziert und stellen die Basis für eine umfassende Grundlagenforschung am FAW dar.
