Die Mitglieder der Abteilung beschäftigen sich mit der Entwicklung empirischer Forschungsmethoden sowie mit dem Stellenwert der empirischen Forschung in der Wissenschaft. Des Weiteren wird an der Abteilung zu aktuellen Themen empirisch geforscht. Untersucht werden Bildungsungleichheiten, Arbeitsmarkt und Arbeitsbedingungen, Sozialstruktur und gesellschaftlicher Wandel in Österreich, Migration, Gesundheit sowie familien- und generationenbezogene Fragestellungen und Fragen des abweichenden Verhaltens.
