Wearable Tracking Technology – Towards An Integrative Perspective

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

There is already a wide range of different wearable tracking devices on the market and it is growing rapidly. Out of the availability and low cost, wearable tracking devices (= wearables) such as smartwatches or bracelets for fitness tracking are becoming even more popular and this trend is not only limited to the younger generation. The variety of wearables on the market is huge and so are the opportunities to track various personal data: health relevant information (nutrition, weight, exercise, sleep quality), emotive information (mood level, life satisfaction) and organizational information (work schedule, time management) or events (social interaction, goals). Wearable technology is a current topic and lots of research is still required as many issues remain unexplored: What possibilities offer these wearables and self-tracking technologies for scientific research, especially in the field of psychology and social sciences? Why do people want to track personal data or on the other hand, why not? What are the motives behind tracking self-relevant data and what are the most significant parameters considering usage of wearables? We conduct an online study to learn more about the usage behavior of wearable tracking devices. We also plan a longitudinal follow up for the online study to investigate the usage behavior of wearables over time. Since the online study is currently being carried out, first results will be presented.
