Vertical Integration in a University-industry-collaboration

Description

The objective of this case study was to analyze a successful publicly funded university-industry-collaboration (ACCM - Austrian Center of Competence in Mechatronics). ACCM is a research network and consists of various network partners, such as industrial partners, scientific partners and a technology integrator, the Linz Center of Mechatronics (LCM). The results of this study show that ACCM covers the complete innovation value chain, from the idea to the (almost) final product (vertical integration). LCM has a particularly important role in this innovation value chain. LCM is constituted as an applied research institution and has an integration position between science and industry. A main function of LCM is to realize prototypes building on basic research results, which have to fulfill industrial demands. In this respect, the role of LCM goes far beyond the known functions of a technology transfer office. LCM acts as technology integrator.
