Towards a monolithic design of large aircraft wing spoilers using numerical topology and laminate optimization

Description

The aerospace industry is facing increasing demands regarding reduced fuel consumption, low costs for manufacturing and expeditious development time. These are the motives for the presented investigations about the redesign of spoilers for large civil aircrafts made from fiber-polymer composites. Spoilers are significantly loaded by bending and thus typically designed as a sandwich structure. However, the production process with pre-impregnated textiles and honeycomb cores cured in an autoclave is elaborate. This reasons the development of a monolithic spoiler by extensive use of numeric optimization methodologies. Thereby, the approach is divided in different phases. First, a finite element model is created to generate design solutions for the global structure via topology optimization. Next, the design interpretation of the resulting topology follows and a shell structure is established for laminate optimization. Here the optimization of the layup is done in respect to fiber angels, batch size, thickness and layup sequence.
