Time Investment of Local Politicians across Europe

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

In most municipalities local politicians only get small monetary incentives. Since the salary is not high enough to cover the cost of living, the political office is usually only carried out as a part-time job. So far we do not know how much time municipal councillors invest in their political activity. Neither we know on which factors the time investment depends on. How much time a councillor spends for council-related business might depend on various causes. Obvious influencing factors are for example salary or workload in other jobs. Next to these factors many other variables like age, gender, education, political ideology or family situation might affect the weekly hours spend for council-related business. Further one could assume that the average working hours vary between and within countries depending on the extent of competences located at the municipal level and the size of the municipality. The research question - Which factors explain the time a councillor spends for council-related business? - is answered based on survey data conducted in 29 European countries. The data is analysed using regression analysis with country dummies and country group dummies.
