Description

Thermal and thermo-rheological characterization is very important for industrial manufacturing. Knowledge of various parameters gained through these methods facilitates the work of the polymer processing industry and enables them to prevent severe production-losses. Fundamentally, the aim of this work is to develop, implement and verify a proper processing methodology for heterogeneous, metallic particle filled magnetoelastomers (elastomeric-based composites whose mechanical properties and shape can be modified by means of external magnetic fields). Our materials consist of various types of Ethylene-Octene Copolymers (DOW Engage) filled with different metallic particles. These materials have increasingly been used as mechanical actuators or in applications involving controlled mechanical damping. The finally obtained mechanical properties (and therefore the possible applications) of magnetoelastomers strongly depend on the particle distribution and their arrangement within the elastomeric matrix. To control these features properly, we have to gain an insight into the movement of the particles inside the matrix. For this purpose it is unavoidable to know the temperature dependence of the viscosity, which we receive via Rheometry. The presented part of the work especially deals with the possibility of correlating thermo-rheological measurements (ANTON PAAR UDS 200) with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (PERKIN ELMER DSC 8000) measurements. The rheological data was obtained from strain-controlled temperature-sweeps (20-250°C, heating rate 1°C / min, constant deformation γ = 0.1% and frequency f = 1 Hz) with a plate-plate geometry (Ø = 10 mm). With both techniques the softening and the melting point of our samples can be measured with reasonable accordance.
