Theorizing the Affective Journey of Creativity

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkscience-to-public

Description

In this work, we draw on the notion of affective trajectory to theorize the role of affective states in creativity. Whereas prior literature has demonstrated that creators’ affective states impact creativity, it has also generated a trove of mixed results that make it unclear to ascertain their real benefit. To address this issue, we propose a processual theory of affect in creativity and advance how distinct affective states, characterized by either positive or negative valence and by moderate activation levels, favor the specific creative activities punctuating the journey of creativity. Affective trajectories are then the means through which creators sync their cognitive and behavioral processes with the varying demands of creativity. In this framework, we show how creators can bend and guardrail their affective trajectories to navigate the journey of creativity, but also highlight the limits of such attempts to regulate their own emotions.
