Description
The Upper Austrian solid waste management targets to reduce the emission of climate-relevant greenhouse gases. In order to depict the climate relevance of the municipal solid waste management in Upper Austria and to develop concepts for its environmental-economical optimisation a study was conducted, including the examination of landfilling, waste incineration, biotechnological waste treatment, mechanical waste treatment and collecting and transports of waste. For each type of waste treatment the carbon dioxide equivalents were calculated, as well as the CO2-credits arising from the production of energy through landfilling, waste incineration and biotechnological waste treatment. One vital findings of the study is that in future the increased function of the Upper Austrian solid waste management will be producing energy. In addition, the production of secondary raw materials coming from solid waste contributes to resource protection.
