The Need for New Leadership in Transiting Countries

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkscience-to-science

Description

In many African countries, the need for a new style of leadership, good governance, is evident. The ideas for this are on the table and civil society is pushing, above all the youth. But how can a change in leadership style be achieved? Coups have proven to be unreliable methods throughout history. A revolution from above, inspired by the African Union, is rather doubtful because of the actors involved. What remains is change at individual national levels within the framework of constitutional possibilities. It will not be easy to persuade the ruling elites to make changes or to take power from them. And is good governance guaranteed after a change of power? Probably not in all cases. But the pressure to do so is growing.
