The Characteristics of the Blockchain-Technology and its Potential Benefits for the Manufacturing Industry

The phenomenon of the blockchain-technology is considered to provide an innovative potential for organizations which may benefit from implementing this technology and provide new products and services which may also lead to business model innovation. Still little is known about the specific innovative potentials based on the characteristics of the blockchain-technology. In that regard, this study aims to research this phenomenon in the context of product-service-systems. In that sense, the research ought to answer the following research question: “What is the innovative potential of the blockchain-technology, based on its characteristics, in terms of product-service-systems on the business model level and what are innovative approaches via this technology?” To address this research question, an explorative qualitative multi-stage research design is developed, based on two conceptual pillars – product-service-systems and business models. It is expected that the results may provide further empirical insights into this phenomenon as well as provide practical implications for the development of use-cases by organizations.
