Description

Autonomous driving is but a special case of automation-supported interaction with human drivers. Indeed, automated driving includes two kind of components, on one side deterministic, like the vehicle as well as (on a short term) the environment, on the other one, stochastic, in particular the other drivers. The challenge is finding a solution which is not too conservative but still provides significant safety for the users. The situation is similar to some medical systems, like artificial pancreas, where a technical systems is applied to a stochastic one (the patient) with both the need of a safety margin but also a clear optimization target.
