Software Engineering for Digital Twins

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

Due to the vast usage and importance of cyber-physical systems as a backbone of our society, the design, realization, operation, and maintenance of such systems are becoming more and more challenging. As an answer, digital twins are emerging in many domains and are gaining attention to support different phases of the system lifecycle such as design-space exploration, runtime adaptation, and predictive maintenance. While benefits of using digital twins are already demonstrated for different settings and domains, the development, operation, and evolution of digital twins pose several novel engineering challenges.

In my talk, I will summarize different research endeavors we have followed to tackle the challenges in engineering digital twins. Especially, I will focus on how to close the gap between the design and operation of systems by presenting selected techniques and methods for developing the different software layers of digital twin architectures. Finally, I will discuss the important role of software engineering for interdisciplinary engineering process in Industry 4.0/5.0 settings.
