Simple synthetic jet actuators for cooling applications using soft or rigid magnets

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster presentationscience-to-science

Description

Consumer electronics are getting both smaller and more powerful. Hence, there is a need for small, scalable, silent, reliable and low-cost cooling-systems. In order to meet these requirements, we designed simple synthetic jet (SynJet) actuators using silicone elasstomer membranes together with either soft composite or rigid neodymium magnets. The SynJet actuators were electromechanically driven near their mechanical resonance frequency in the low-frequency range between 5 Hz and 120 Hz. In order to compare both configurations, we characterized the SynJet actuators thoroughly by measuring the air pressure in the SynJet housing, the magnet's deflection and the electric current and votage at the driving electromagnet. In test configurations, the fabricated SynJet actuators reduced the thermal resistance by about 60 % compared to natural convection, which proves their feasibility for active cooling solutions.
