Seeded Membrane Distillation Crystallization For Hypersaline Brine Treatment

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

In the face of population growth and global water scarcity, sustainable desalination technologies are a promising path to economic continuity, resource conservation, and social justice. Evaporation and crystallization of salt solutions is a habitual industry practice; however, this strategy is energy and equipment intensive. Near-Zero Liquid Discharge Membrane Crystallization (NZLDMC) approach through process integration of membrane distillation and crystallization in a single apparatus leads to a considerable reduction in capital and operating cost requirements and improves sustainability. In this study, the investigations on a laboratory scale and pilot plants thereby focused on the application of seeding processes at NZLDMC to concentrate the saturated synthetic mono- and multi-salt solutions as well as real-salt solutions. The effects of salt crystals and seeds on membrane performance under different operating conditions were investigated. The study shows promising results concerning yield and long-term stability and offers future process technology demonstration in industry, e.g., in municipal water treatment to fractionate the salt fractions in multi-salt solutions.
