Rural Social Entrepreneurship: The Challenge of Positioning in Multiple Fields

  • Richard Lang (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

The presentation draws on case study findings from the EU-funded research project "RurInno" which is also featured in the book "Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Rural Europe" published with Routledge. Rural social enterprises simultaneously operate in different fields which have their own institutional logics (e.g. state, market, third sector, community). Thus, they are vulnerable to legitimacy challenges from the external environment that manifest in the organisation’s strategies. The Strategic Action Field perspective (Fligstein and McAdam, 2012) helps exploring the dynamics taking place in rural social enterprises and goes beyond an analysis that focuses only on structural characteristics of these organisations.
