Quantum Software Ante Portas

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkscience-to-science

Description

Quantum computing has received vast interest in recent years due to its potential to solve computational problems intractable on even the best classical computers. While early research focused on the physical realization of this potential, recent advances in quantum computing hardware raise the question: how can we best use such machines? Because quantum computers are based on fundamentally different principles than the computers we are used to, existing intuitions and best practices of software engineering often cannot be transferred to quantum software. Therefore, we need new methods, techniques, and tools as well as a new generation of well-trained software engineers to efficiently and effectively develop software for quantum computers.
In this talk, I will present how we approach this new field from a software engineering perspective. While software engineering research developed several useful abstraction layers for classical computers, such abstractions do not yet exist in quantum software. How to deal with this situation by applying model-based and search-based techniques to engineer quantum software is one of the main research questions we are currently investigating.
To conclude my talk, I will broaden the scope and outline the current research landscape in the field of quantum software engineering and what is required to train the first generation of quantum-native software engineers.
