Primary Care Palliative Medicine: Where Are We Standing?

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

Palliative care is an essential part of comprehensive, compassionate
healthcare—especially in the primary care setting, where long-term
relationships between patients and general practitioners (GPs) offer
unique opportunities for early identification of palliative needs. This
presentation provides an overview of the current status of palliative
medicine in primary care, highlighting both achievements and areas
for development. Through examples of good practice from Slovenia
and beyond, it illustrates how GPs can effectively integrate palliative
care into everyday work. Special attention is given to ongoing public
and professional awareness-raising initiatives, which aim to
demystify palliative care and promote its early inclusion in
treatment plans. Despite progress, several barriers remain, including
insufficient training, lack of structured support, limited resources,
and fragmented coordination with specialist services. The
presentation concludes with practical suggestions on what is needed
to improve palliative care in primary settings: better education for
healthcare professionals, clear guidelines, stronger
interprofessional collaboration, sustainable policy support, and,
above all, a cultural shift that embraces palliative care as a standard
part of care throughout the illness trajectory—not just at the end of
life.
