Wearable soft electronic devices are a current frontier in medical applications and promise to revolutionize (personalized) healthcare. Large-scale
deployment and ubiquitous use of such soft and body-conformal smart patches suggests that methods for their battery-free operation are found. For
many application scenarios, indoor lightning presents a promising and readily available energy source that can be tapped with (ultra)flexibe solar
cells.
This talk introduces materials and fabrication methods for thin, light, flexible and air-stable quasi-2D perovskite solar cells and modules with extreme
mechanical properties that are unmatched in power produced per weight (up to 44 W/g). These solar modules show record breaking power
conversion efficiency under indoor light, approaching 30% under 600 lx illumination. Encapsulation strategies are developed that not only enable
prolonged operation of these solar modules under ambient and even high-humidity (80%) and elevated temperature conditions, but also efficiently
prevent leakage of substances with potential health hazards. Upscaling to modules with 4 cm2 active area delivers ample power for a diverse set of
wearable devices and allows their uninterrupted operation even under dim light conditions. Enabled through these photovoltaic devices, we
demonstrate battery free on or near-body medical wearables able to analyze sweat or breath. Beyond their use in wearable electronics, these PV
modules are promising energy harvesters to power (soft) robotic systems including UAVs, terrestrial and aquatic drones and are investigated for
future space applications.
