Description

The interest in hairpin winding technology is still increasing due to their potential in reducing manufacturing costs and increasing power density. Higher slot fill factors, better heat dissipation and shorter end-windings are typical advantages of hairpin windings compared to round wires. However, considerable additional losses might occur at high frequencies due to the large conductor’s cross sections. Hence, all of these aspects have to be considered during the design process of an electric machine in order to get a highly efficient design. In this work the performance of a PMSM with hairpin windings is compared to conventional round wires. Since the maximum speed is 17,000 rpm, proximity and skin losses have to be considered carefully. The design and optimization process of a PMSM with hairpin windings including additional skin and proximity losses, is presented. Finally, the hairpin motor is compared to the original design with round wires.
