Description

Due to the pandemic, lecturers are increasingly using digital learning platforms such as Moodle. However, the question arises whether these platforms fully exploit the current technical possibilities of Web 2.0 (design, integration of multimedia content, user interface...) as well as didactic methods. In order to investigate the possibilities of Web 2.0, a prototype of a learning platform based on Wordpress was created for the course "Timebased Media on the Web“ at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, which is supposed to extend the classical university teaching with modern, multimedia self-learning units. In a nutshell, students should work through content at their own pace. For this purpose, the content was separated into logical units, and they must then apply the new knowledge in the form of a practical project for each micro unit. Once this has been successfully assessed by the lecturer, further chapters are unlocked. In the end of the course, learners had to apply their acquired knowledge in form of the realization of a final short project. A very important component of this course is personal group feedback from the instructor to his students (Webconferencing Sessions) after each project. This leads to interesting conversations, group dynamics and a higher motivation for upcoming projects. For the theoretical content, the focus was primarily on practical knowledge transfer, as well as multimedia variety (text, images, sound, recordings.... ) to make the chapters more vivid and tangible. Based on the feedback and the grades of the students, it can be stated that the teaching platform was perceived as positive and helpful. The combination of "face-to-face teaching", short projects as well as guided self-learning units was also rated as positive and Innovative.
