Measuring the reaction kinetics of free radical polymerizations of n-butylacrylate

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster presentationunknown

Description

In industrial processes polyacrylates are produced almost entirely by free radical polymerization. For this process common initiators are peroxides or azo compounds. These can be activated thermically or through irradiation. The challenge for the production of polyacrylates is the control of free radical polymerization. This reaction starts spontaneously with a heat of polymerization around 60-80 kJ/mol acrylate. DSC experiments at different temperatures have been recorded for the polymerization of n-butylacrylate to monitor the reaction kinetics. With the obtained data the necessary cooling capacities of a pilot plant scale reactor have been calculated
