Mathematical Models for the Heat Transfer in Continuous Steel Casting Secondary Cooling

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkunknown

Description

In continuous casting of steel the strand surface has approximately 1000°C. The strand is guided and transported by water cooled rolls. The surface temperature and therefore the steel quality depends strongly on the heat transfer mechanism of the rolls. The temperature load and distribution is a major factor for the roll lifetime. Thus it is important to know the heat transfer trough the rolls as accurate as possible. A 1D and 2D model, considering heat removal by roll contact and radiation are presented. The 1D model gains a short calculation time and easy variation of the parameters. Therefor it neglects the heat transfer in circumferential direction. This shortcoming is quantified by comparison with 2D models. Axisymmetric roll geometries can be simulated efficient with the 1D transient model as well as with the 2D steady model. Non-axisymmetric roll geometries require time intensive transient simulations. An approach for using equivalent axisymmetric geometries instead of non-axisymmetric geometries is proposed that can be to used in the 2D steady model or 1D transient model. The results are compared with a 2D transient Non-axisymmetric simulation. Most of the important effects are also correctly reproduced by the simpler models. A 0D model in form of a thermal resistance network allows extensive parameter studies for the overall heat transfer.
