    This presentation gives an overview of the environmental issues in Austria, including geographical and economic frameworks, environmental political programmes and reveals the importance of resource efficiency for Austria and other European countries. Hence, Material Flow Cost Accounting is presented as a tool which aims at improving the resource efficiency at the micro level. The method, the main elements and the target as well as the main points of criticism of Material Flow Cost accounting are presented. It is argued that the main criticism of MFCA may be used as a starting point for an enhancement of the instrument.
