LINGUISTIC AND SOCIAL INEQUALITY IN THE EMI CONTEXT: IS EAP AN ENABLER OR POTENTIAL FIELD LEVELLER?

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

Derived from my PhD thesis, this talk explored the impact studying through EMI has on different socio-economic groups of students. I made 3 claims: (1) successful outcomes rely more on students having had access to authentic and immersive EL teaching and practice from a young age. (2) students who had such access were likely to come from higer SES backgrounds. (3) Students from higher socio-economic status backgrounds tend to enjoy higher levels of self-efficacy born of higher cultural capital.
