Life Cycle Assessment of Large-Scale Thermal Energy Storage Systems for District Heating Networks: Part A - Pit Storage

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

Large-scale thermal energy storage technologies such as pit and tank storage are of high relevance and interest for district heating networks to reach the long-term of 100% renewable energy supply. These would enable seasonal storage of heat from renewables such as solar thermal energy on the one hand and flexible heat storage from waste heat sources as well as Power-to-Heat on the other. The main objective of this paper is to assess large-scale thermal energy storage systems as to their life cycle metrics. A special focus is put on the use of recycling materials for enhanced thermals insulation of the thermal energy storage systems. In this part a, the concept of pit storage is specifically addressed. For the assessment, the Eco Audit Tool of CES Selector by Ashby et al. and Granta Design was used.
