Description

New technologies such as robotics or artificial intelligence are influencing the way leaders do their business. Leaders are facing a change of role as digitalization increases. Although new digital technologies have tremendous potential to support and partially substitute leaders, leaders are crucial managing digital transformation as technologies are limiting flexibility, creativity, and intuition. To provide empirical evidence about the role of leaders in the digital era, we conducted a group Delphi study with 42 experts. The results reveal that leadership becomes more relevant as digitalization increases. As technical and methodological skills can be substituted by the technologies, interactional, social, and strategic, conceptional skills of leaders are gaining in importance. Active relationship management, leading change processes, ensuring empowerment, and conceptional digitization skills are substantial for leaders.
