Kepler: A Poet Needs to be a Seer. Thoughts on Mathematical Art and Creativity"

This presentation has its general roots in my interests to connect mathematics to other "worlds", for example, philosophy and arts. The concrete roots of my lecture trace back to an invited talk I gave at the occasion of the conference "BRIDGES LINZ 2019: Mathematics, Art, Music, Architecture, Education, Culture" which was jointly organized by the JKU and the Ars Electronica Center Linz. On the web page related to these series of annual conferences, https://www.bridgesmathart.org, one finds the following mission statement: "The goal of the Bridges Organization is to foster research, practice, and new interest in mathematical connections to art, music, architecture, and culture. All too often, mathematics can seem disconnected from or even antithetical to these other topics. We believe that mathematics and art can inform and enrich each other, that there are great ideas waiting to be found in mathematical analysis and synthesis of art, and that artistic thinking and activities can enliven the mathematics classroom." My "What If" presentation is quite in line with this statement. Besides touching also aspects of art, it mainly centers around philosophical aspects of the creative process underlying mathematical research. Starting with Kepler, who seems to be an almost perfect example for a masterly connection of the major "Bridges themes", my talk presents a potpourri of personal thoughts.
