Description
New technologies such as robotics or artificial intelligence are influencing the way leaders do their business. Consequently, leaders are facing a change of role as digitalization increases. Although digital technologies have a tremendous potential to support and partially substitute leaders, leaders are crucial for managing digital transformation as technologies are limiting flexibility, creativity, and intuition. To provide empirical evidence about the role of leaders in the digital era, we conducted a group Delphi study with 42 experts. The results reveal that leadership becomes more relevant as digitalization increases. As technical and methodological skills can be substituted by technologies, interactional, social, strategic- conceptional skills are gaining in importance. At the same time, active relationship and change management, ensuring empowerment, and conceptional digitization skills are seen as substantial for leaders in times of digital transformation.
